We zijn op zoek naar de perfecte baan en we willen het perfecte lichaam. Het liefst wonen we in een mooi, groot huis met het duurste interieur. De Japanse schoonheidsleer daarentegen gaat uit van bescheidenheid en de waardering van imperfectie en eenvoud. Deze filosofie wordt geduid met een term waar wij in Nederland geen directe vertaling voor hebben: wabi-sabi. ‘Wabi’ en ‘sabi’ werden niet altijd samen genoemd, ze hebben daarom ook verschillende betekenissen. ‘Wabi’ refereert naar een manier van leven, naar het subjectieve en ruimtelijke gebeurtenissen. ‘Sabi’ refereert naar materiële objecten, de kunst en de literatuur, het objectieve en het esthetische ideaal en tijdelijke gebeurtenissen.”

Het is een Japanse levensfilosofie, waarbij mensen opzoek gaan naar rust. Rust in hun leven, in hun gedachten, en ook in hun interieur. Wabi-Sabi staat voor de schoonheid van imperfectie, het aanvaarden van vergankelijkheid, – het mooie effect van de tijd op mens en object – , het pure van de natuur.” Deze stijl zie ik ook terug in vele andere woontrends: de sobere en Gustaviaanse woontrend, in het Deense design, Scandinavische interieur en in veel brocante en Vintage items. In tegenstelling tot andere ontwerptrends, heeft wabi-sabi geen specifieke vormen, kleuren of decor die dit definiëren. De stijl volgt dezelfde leidende principes als de filosofie zelf: natuurlijk, inwendig, moeiteloos en bovenal perfect onvolmaakt.

Je kunt kiezen voor een meubelstuk of accessoire dat gevoelig is voor veroudering, verwering, roest of verkleuring. In plaats van massaproducten en -materialen, kies je voor duurzame producten zoals hout, wol, klei, bamboe, leer, steen en onbewerkte metalen, omdat deze diepte en textuur naar de kamer brengen. Als je een badkamer ontwerpt, zal een groot stuk met een statement zoals een koperen bad na verloop van tijd elegant verouderen en een patina krijgen. In een wabi-sabi-keuken past een gootsteen in natuursteen beter dan roestvrij staal of vuurvast steen omdat ze organische variaties in de steen vertonen die ze volledig uniek maken. Ook een oude muur hoeft niet perfect te zijn gestuukt of geschilderd (zie foto 3 “distressed wall”). Heb je niet zo’n mooie oude verweerde muur, dan kan je dat altijd nog zelf doen. Op Youtube vind je tal van voorbeelden, om dit geweldige effect zelf te creëren.

Kies, in plaats van voor nieuwe meubels, ook eens voor oude meubels met een verhaal. Mix oud en nieuw met elkaar om je interieur in balans te houden. Oude meubels met hier en daar een krasje hebben een geschiedenis, de imperfecties die ze in het verloop van tijd kregen maken de meubels perfect imperfect.

Kies voor natuurlijke materialen in huis, zoals hout, steen, katoen, wol en linnen. De Wabi Sabi trend vindt haar inspiratie vooral in de natuur, en verval. Een houten vloer, of vloer die eruit ziet als hout, bijvoorbeeld. En ook luchtige linnen gordijnen in een naturel tint passen perfect in een Wabi Sabi interieur.

Hang een onafgewerkt schilderij of een oude spiegel boven de open haard. Bewonder alles dat uniek is maar nog steeds een doel dient. Je zult deze items niet vinden in de grote woonwinkels. Zoek in plaats daarvan op lokale rommelmarkten, veilingen, antiek- en kringloopwinkels.
